The Chat Room is a group of S1 to S6 at secondary school, is part of Ellon Parish Church and often involved in services and church activities. We meet on a Sunday morning at 11:00 for an hour. We chat a lot-hence the name- and have lots of fun trying different things. We have had a number of fantastic sleepovers involving a tiny aount of sleep!! We also have , in the past, held an extremely successful talent show which rased funds for Children In Need. We decorated our room ourselves and it looks reall stylish. We all enjoy a laugh and are willing to try almost anything. We even jumped out of wheelie bins during a church srvice! We take part in varied activities so there is always a chance to use the different talents and skills we possess.

Chat Room News

Chatroom hosted a quiz in the Kirk Centre on Friday 28th August to raise funds for the refurbishment project.  Quizmasters Mick and Hilary Gordon kept us on our toes with their questions and a good night was had by all and a total of £342 was raised.  Well done to the winners of the quiz – The Skywalkers! Chatroom would like to extend their thanks to everyone who came along and helped make the evening a success.  Thank you also to those who kindly donated raffle prizes for the event.

On Sunday 30th August, Chatroom piled on to the BB bus and headed out to Alford for an afternoon of tubing at the town’s dry ski slope.  We have been joined by some new recruits this term so we thought what better way to initiate them into the Chatroom fold than throwing them down the slope in a rubber ring!!  Accompanied by their leaders and Rev Stephen Emery and Neil Henderson, a fun-filled time was had by all as you will no doubt see in the pictures!
Although some of us were a little more bruised by the end than others!!

Please also note that Chatroom are running the Webb Ivory catalogues this year in aid of their funds and the refurbishment project.  Books are available from any Chatroom member or from Donna Murray, Lara Anderson or Karen Yule (Chatroom leaders).

All set for the Quiz Night

Chatroom B Bounce Day – Sunday 28th June 2008

Sunday the 28th June was the last day of the current term for the young people in the EPC Chatroom and wow did we go out with a bang.  We booked the use of St Ternans hall for the afternoon so that we could all have some fun and let of some well deserved steam…

Joined by the Rev Stephen Emery, Neil Henderson and friends of chatroom we had a fantastically springy afternoon.  We hired the fire brigade bouncy castle along with the Boys Brigade trampoline and went wild.  As you will see from the photos we had immense fun.  Spirits were high and the heat and energy levels matched.  After bouncing around for a few hours we played some duster hockey which was very competitive, Rev Emery and Neil being the worst offenders.  The afternoon was finished off with some well deserved ice cream to cool off.  A fantastic afternoon was had by all.  Here’s to next term.

GO APE WITH CHAT ROOM

As you may know “The Chatroom” decided to go to Aberfoyle to take part in outdoor activities and visit the “Go Ape” forest adventure centre for their annual summer trip. Over the past year we have been saving up money every week and have had a few fundraisers including the Fun-Fest, quizzes and a Body Shop party. We would like to give a big Thank You to everyone who came to our events and gave us generous donations. They went a long way in contributing to costs of the trip.

The days we spent at David Marshal Lodge were jam packed with activities, team work and exercise. The first evening we had dinner at the canteen- which we all grew fond of! and had a relaxing time in the cabins…I say relaxing, however I received an unpleasant injury from a rather intense game of snap…but in spite of that, it was good start to the holiday. I was unaware however, that this was only the first of many wounds…
We started our first day blind-folded walking through tyres and clambering through tangled bungee cords whilst holding on to a line of thirteen other people. The obstacle course included being sprayed and covered in buckets of cold water. I  somehow ended up covered in mud from head to toe whilst everyone else managed to get out practically mud-free. The course seemed to take hours, however the time was worth it as we all communicated well as a team and no matter how dirty, managed to get out in one piece.

Next was raft building. We were given big poles of wood, plastic oil carriers and ropes which each team had to make a stable raft out of. Both teams spent their time talking to each other and finding the best way to build it. After both teams were finished, we were given challenges. Steve’s team were first and I have to say, that when I compared the two rafts, I was slightly worried  about ours . They started off well but eventually the whole team fell into the water! I wish I could say our attempt was a lot better but we lost three team members overboard and Jayne, Eilidh and I were left to complete all challenges- which we did.

Rock climbing and abseiling I did not enjoy so much as it was responsible for the amount of uncountable bruises on my legs. No matter how hard I tried I could not get up the crag. My finger tips aching and knees sore, I decided to step down and anchor the ropes instead. There were a few high flyers like Jayne who went up the crag several times with  no problems. Abseiling was better and almost everyone, even the adults, managed to have a go of ‘stepping out over the edge‘. It happened to be Jayne’s birthday, so to finish the day, we had a bonfire at which we were introduced to s’mores by Donna.

Our final frontier was “Go Ape”. The weather was awful and I soon discovered that my waterproof jacket was not so waterproof after all.  We went in teams and Karen Yule and I (Team Karen I named us!) were a great team. Karen’s fear of heights did not get the better of her in the forest of tight ropes, zip lines, Tarzan swings and wobbly bridges. I was very proud of her! She didn’t think she would do it, but she completed the course! The day, no matter how wet and cold, was a good one and we experience not just heights and harnesses but in our teams we were able to stay together and make sure everyone was safe.

The trip was very enjoyable and even though I was covered in cuts, bruises and midgie bites I had an awesome time. The Chatroom as a whole would like to thank Donna, Lara, Karen, Steve and Eleanor because without them we wouldn’t have all been able to ‘Go Ape!’
On a more personal note I would like to thank everyone involved with the Chatroom. This has been my final experience with them as a member as I have now left school. The team grew closer after this trip and the friendships I’ve found here, both kid and adult alike, I will sorely miss.
To any prospective chat roomers- come and join in! Because I guarantee you will discover friends and memories you won’t want to forget.

Chat Room will be meeting in the Kirk Centre after church each Sunday in the school term at 11.30am until 12.30pm. All secondary school pupils are welcome to come along and join in. Please contact Lara Anderson, Donna Murray and Karen Yule for any information or the Kirk centre.

P.S. S’mores consist  of marshmallows and a slab of chocolate between two Graham crackers. A campfire treat popular in the USA and Canada
